Trip to the Valdres Valley: Hiking & Camping in Beitostølen

Our trip began on a bus at 9:30am on Saturday morning

Driving through the Valdres Valley

Valdres is located midway between Oslo and Bergen

The valley lies in between the Jotunheimen mountains

Four hours later we arrive in the very small and barren town of Beitostølen,
situated at the edge of the Jotunheimen National Park

.

in the winter Beitostølen becomes a popular place for alpine and cross-country skiing
:)

we were so lucky to have such good weather

Such a crazy landscape

Behind the small lake, smack in the middle, is where we pitched up our tarp

Hey Wheels

It wasn't very cold out during the day, around 5°C,
but the small lakes were partially iced over and most of the streams were frozen... so we knew we were in for a cold night

View from where we set up camp.
It took us a while because we didn't have many options tree-wise for pitching up the tarp,
but eventually we found a perfect spot.

After setting up the tarp and dropping off our bags we continued hiking.

.

It looks very dry, but
...some of the ground we were walking over was also very marshy.
These colourful plants felt like walking on sponge!

The terrain was so rocky and bare that you could see for miles and miles.
Getting lost was almost an impossibility, though you could get confused because the trails were so similar.

Beautiful snow capped mountains

Took Warren and I half an hour to build that fire! (Wheeler provided "emotional support" haha)
I had almost given up when I discovered how well dry tree bark works for kindling.
It was good to have some warm food in our stomachs after eating sandwiches all day.

Sunset

Looking down from on top of a large rock (which had an opening to a small cave on the other side)
behold the tarp!
We found that plank of wood (lucky us) and wedged it against the rock. Then we tied some string between two bushes and the wedged plank of wood and hung the lovely tarp. You can't tell, but the ground is on an incline. Luckily we had the rock to stop us from sliding down, so we slept the whole night with our feet propped up against the rock. At least the ground was flat!

Night time.
So quiet.
Not a soul around.

Sunday morning! We survived the night!
